Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice...

On a night like tonight, a long weekend when I am home all alone watching “chick flicks”, overdosing on Diet Coke and moping, he interrupts his hot weekend date to call me to see how I am doing. He hates to see me cry and will always rush to my aid. He will drive me to the hospital when I get sick and although the site of blood makes him faint, he will never let go of my hand. He will let me cry all over his favorite sweater. He will listen patiently as I yap about my boyfriend, my job, my life… His eyes twinkle with pride and happiness when things are going my way. He reminds me, when I lose my way, that I am the most beautiful, smart and lovely woman he knows. He will gently tell me that life is not a fairytale and beg me to open my eyes whenever I lose my wits, which is pretty often. He shows me off to his friends and colleagues as if I was some sort of princess or movie star. He trusts me with his deepest fears and darkest secrets. He will hear me out when I break him to pieces when he behaves like an ass with a girl. He makes me laugh through tears. He rejoices when I am happy and his hearts breaks when mine does. He worries silently as he sees me make mistakes and stands by for when disaster strikes, always answering that teary phone call, never judging, always ready to listen without ever saying “I told you so”. He coaches me on “men handling” although I am an awful student. He tells me to steer clear from men like him. He has said one of the sweetest things anyone has ever said to me: “Lydia, lucky will be the man that wins your heart”… Anyway… on a night like tonight, I realized that I am not alone. I figured that there are karmic relationships that make this rite of passage called life bearable, compasses that God provides us with to find our way. When you are far away from home, away from your family, God sends you “stand ins”. Now, can men and women be friends? Yes, my best friend is a man… The kind of friend every girl should have and the kind of boyfriend every girl should avoid. Here is to you, my business partner, my confidant, my “stand in” brother, my true, true friend. Thank God for you.
